I have a corrupted disk #3 of the 2.06 set. Looking at what I _can_
find, the contents seem very similar to those of the 2.06L set.
Can anyone confirm that they are the same before I mess up my settings
by substituting this?

Hi,

I like all demos of FC and i almost always can 'fix' a problem with such
things, but know i can't start Second Reality ANYWAY.

I have 486dx-33
16 Mb. 200 Mb.
GUS 1 MB.
Tape streamer.
and more.

My IRQ are setted good (i didn't try it under os/2 so please don't tell
that).

I have tried this:

WITH GUS
WITHOUT GUS
WITH QEMM/EMM
WITHOUT QEMM/EMM (with himem)

I'm using DOS 6.2.

The demo starts with the settings, but ALWAYS after that 'hangs'.

Any help could be best through EMAIL.

Subject: CD-ROM

OK everybody I'm going to ask some stupid questions now...

My father wants a CD-ROM for Christmas.  I, knowing that present CD-ROM
technology was only going to get faster, and not willing to pay the
additional premium per software item for the CD version, have been totally
uninterested in CD-ROMs, and I know very little about them.

However, I know much more than my mother does, and it has fallen upon me
to buy him the drive for Christmas.

I have a GUS but he only has a Sound Blaster 1.0.

It seems to me that a CD-ROM will require either a SCSI controller (which
is expensive) or a soundcard that can drive it.  So my question is twofold:

1)  How much exactly does a SCSI adapter that can drive a CD-ROM?  Can you
buy a single device CD-ROM-dedicated controller for less money?  We have
no need or interest in adding SCSI drives to the system at this time,
although it wouldn't be a terrible thing to have for future expansion.

2)  Assuming we decided to give Dad a break and buy him a real soundcard
in the bargain (a GUS...) how much do the CD-ROM daughtercards cost?  And
which ones are available?

In short, how much of an additional charge am I going to be looking at on
top of the price of the drive?  (The drive must be external, BTW, as he
has no free drive bays.)

Cakewalk 2.0 (for Windows) supports patch caching for the GUS, so it

Put your GUS' SB/MIDI IRQ on something other than 7 (so that it wouldn't
conflict with the SB's IRQ) and your SB should then work.  Also, for
programs that do not detect the SB, load and unload SBOS before running
them.  If the version of SBOS you have complains about your NMI or IRQs
and refuses to load, then download ../gravis/patch/sbos120.zip from
Epas and use that version instead.

Those *.dll files are more likely protected mode versions of the AIL
drivers than OS/2 drivers.  The GUS doesn't have protected mode AIL
drivers yet.

I don't have the game, but from what I recall, you need to edit remix=1
to remix=2 in wavemix.ini.

Whew!  Well, I just got back from a business trip and noticed that GUS
Game Petition registrations had fallen off severly in my absence.  I
guess I need to advertise again.  Please email your registration to me
in the following form:

First, in the Subject field of your email, write "[GUS Petition]".

Next, in the body, include a few lines that look like this:

Note: use as many address lines as you need to format your address the
way that you usually do.  If you're living somewhere else than the
USA, please include your country.  I'm getting registrations from all
over (Finland, Sweden, France, UK, Singapore, Taiwan, Australia,
Canada, etc.).  It's nice to see the GUS getting so much international
support!

We've collected a few hundred names so far.  I'm going to send out the
first petition in a couple of days.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about and want more information
on the GUS Game Support Petition, please write to me and request it.
I'll be glad to send it.  Don't remain silent about your support for
the GUS!  Take the small amount of time this effort requires!  Don't

First of all, the radio show is called ON COMPUTERS. It airs every
Sunday, 10am-1pm PST.  I'm not sure what station it will be available for
the Canadians, but I'll call the SNP radio network and ask them.

BTW, for those who missed last Sunday's, they went to the COMDEX at Las
Vegas. Next week, they are going to Capitol Hill and talk to the
politicians and hopefully with Al Gore about the Information Highway.
They'll definitely bring their GUS with them. They mentioned that C-SPAN
might broadcast this either live or at a later time.

Mega-Em V2.00B023 Public Beta (MEGEM23B.ZIP)

Here is what you have all been waiting for, the long awaited public
beta release of Mega-Em with SB DAC support. Jayeson has been working
hard on this version since V1.0 was released at the end of August.

There are a few issues that I wish to make clear to everyone in
respect to Mega-Em and UltraSound emulation in general.

   1) Mega-Em gains its power and flexibility by using the
      386/486 processor in protected mode. Because of the nature
      of protected mode you are unable to run more than one
      protected mode application at any one time. (True you can
      use DPMI/VCPI but our testing shows that the DPMI approach
      would slow down emulation to an unbearable level and we
      already support VCPI)

      Hence Mega-Em will not be able to work with games that use
      protected mode, for instance Strike Commander, Privateer, etc...
      In these circumstances you will need to use SBOS to get them
      to work with the UltraSound.

   2) Since Mega-Em approaches Sound Blaster emulation in a different
      manner than SBOS it may work better with some games. For
      example, Mega-Em will work with NHL hockey and FPS football.

   3) Mega-Em does NOT offer Sound Blaster FM emulation. This is being
      planned but is fairly low on the priority list. If you need
      to configure your game for music you will get MUCH better
      results by configuring it for SCC1/General MIDI or MT32 than
      setting it up for Sound Blaster FM.

 What has changed since version 1.0? You'll find a complete revision
 history in the Mega-Em README. The big changes have been the addition
 of Sound Blaster DAC support and the removal of the 20 minute
 time restriction.

Vancouver, British Columbia - November 15, 1993 - Advanced Gravis
today announced it is making available a new sound driver for the
Gravis UltraSound card. The Mega-Em driver will be available
directly from Advanced Gravis.

For games and applications that do not support the Gravis UltraSound
directly, the Mega-Em sound driver will provide emulation of the
Roland SCC-1 (General Midi) and Roland MT-32 sound platforms. Unlike
FM synthesis sound cards, Roland products provide high quality MIDI
music, like the Gravis UltraSound.  In addition to the Roland music
emulation, the Mega-Em driver will also provide compatibility with
Sound Blaster audio and digital effects.

"Many games allow users two separate selections in their installation
and set-up - one for music and one for digital effects", said Grant
Russell, president of Advanced Gravis.  "For older software that does
not take advantage of UltraSound's superior capabilities, Mega-Em is

There is an update to the UltraSound AIL/UltraMID drivers. This update
fixes a few bugs and adds some features including:

                      directory before looking in your ULTRASND\MIDI

Updated Windows Drivers (GUS0035.ZIP)
-----------------------

This version of the UltraSound Windows drivers is from the beginning
of October '93. The decision was made to make this version public for
two reasons. First, many of the problems people are having with the
older windows drivers have been corrected. Including MicroSoft Arcade,
AVI digital audio, After Dark, Laser Master printers and more.
Secondly, these drivers are safe enough for a public beta <grin>. Most
of the changes that are being made to there final release are cosmetic
in nature. Such as the "Debug 0/1" option will be changed to "Verify
Patchs on Load On/Off", Mixer sliders, etc...

Some of the new features and bug fixes are:

 Linear volume                             <- Option in Control Panel
 Streaming digital audio improved          <- Example AVI
 Patch Banking (A librarian not available yet. You will need to edit)
               (ULTRASND.INI manually. An updated Patch Manager is)
               (planned by the final release of these drivers)
 Updated Mixer                             <- Mainly useful for V3.4
                                              UltraSound cards. If you
                                              are running a previous
                                              version of the GUS then
                                              certain options will not
                                              be selectable.
 MIDI notes dropped                        <- Fixed
 Debug Level 1/0                           <- Translation is: Verify
                                              Patches upon Windows load,
                                              ON or OFF

When installing these drivers I strongly suggest you read the README.
There are a few things which I'm sure people will have problems
with if they do not read this file including MIDI not working
under Windows.


Privateer - Lockup Problems (AILPATCH.ZIP)
---------------------------

The latest version of the SBDIG.ADV driver contains routines designed
to correct undocumented "Halt DMA transfer" problems with Sound
Blaster cards.

Unfortunately these routines cause lockup problems with SBOS. The -O1
switch on SBOS is designed to compensate for this, however this
option conflicts with Privateer.

The file AILPATCH.ZIP allows you to search files for these routines
and disable them, allowing SBOS to operate properly.


Patch Maker
-----------

This is another press release they are handing out at Comdex. The
actual program won't be released until the middle of December.

Gravis UltraSound sound card. Patch Maker Lite will be available

The wavetable synthesisor in the Gravis UltraSound uses digital

I have just read an article in 'Windows Magazine' Dec 1993 (UK) singing
the praises of wavetable synthesis over FM, but what wavetable cards
are mentioned? You guessed it, no GUS.

What are mentioned are Turtle Beach MultiSound and Maui, WaveBlaster
add on for SoundBlaster, and Orchid SoundWave 32 (sounds like another
ROM card). You would think that the GUS didn't exist sometimes, let
alone that its been around for a year or so.

Well, I just spent several hours getting the Terminator:Rampage demo via
e-mail (since I have no FTP access through my current account) and at 2400
baud, this is no easy task. Uudecoded it, unzipped it, set it all up...
and got a message saying it requires 2MB of free EMS to run. Aaargh! Guess
I must have missed any mention of this as I have only been receiving the
Daily Digest for about 3 weeks... Well, not complaining, really, just
needed to vent my frustration I guess, and wanted to make sure this
doesn't happen to anybody else. 'Nuff said. By the way, can somebody
please tell me what system resources (memory, CPU, etc.) are minimally
necessary to run the 2nd Reality demo? (before I download that and then
find out it doesn't work either :) Well, happy GUSsing, Chris-

OK, I bought my GUS and was using it with my SB-pro midi cable (the
only part of my old SB-pro that I kept :*)
It worked perfectly. With WinJammer I could record stuff from my Midi
synth fine. However, recently whenever I plug the midi connectors
into my synth, my computer bombs out after a while with an "ON BOARD
PARITY ERROR!!!". This only seems to happen under windoze :-(
Anyone had similar experiences??? Anyone know what the problem is???

On another subject, windoze seems to miss notes terribly!!! I am busy
sequencing New Order's "Blue Monday" and am getting incredibly
infuriated when listening to my sequence and notes get skipped.
Playing the same sequence with PlayMidi from DOS does not cause any
skipped notes, and I have tried several settings for number of active
voices in Windoze (14,20,28,32), but skipped notes occur in all of
them. Does anyone know if the new Windoze drivers will fix this
problem??? PS: I have a 486DX-33 and I dont think the speed of the
computer has anything to do with the amount of skipped notes (it
seemed about the same on a 386DX-33).

I appreciate any help.

I had the following error from EMM386 whenever I tried to load Ultramid on
my machine:

EMM386:  DMA mode not supported.

Despite the bizarre error message, the only thing that was wrong is that I
didn't have my GUS magic environment variables set.

ULTRASND=220,... (<-- whatever your setting are)
ULTRINIT
ULTRADIR=C:\ULTRASND  (<-- wherever your install directory is)

    for sure) but they work awesome for headphones. With a small amount
    of effort (and about 15 bucks) you can make a speaker control, though.
    (Yes, I'm working on getting this in the FAQ! :-)

    ==> WHAT!? You were going to connect your PC speaker to "some ampli-
    fied source... Mic input"? I'll assume something was *lost* on the
    way to my terminal :-) But connecting the PC speaker _is_ a reasonable
    thing to do in two ways:
    (1) Connecting to ONE of the amp-out channels gives you a compact
    sound source (no external wires, speakers, etc.) but you need a
    volume control <g>
    (2) Using the PC speaker AS A MICROPHONE might sound bizarre (maybe
    this is what Greg had in mind) but anyone who ever experimented with
    this knows it works (fair), despite impedance and other neat stuff.
    (But in this case you obviously haven't got the ~$100 or so to spend
    on a good mike :)
    Sure the CD I/P jack is good for something... it's another line in.
    (I think Mike Batchelor is the resident CD-ROM expert...)

Subject: Windows start-up/Mitsumi connector/MPC Wizzard

I seem to remember somebody saying that there was a way to
somehow disable the GUS windows driver from reading and
verifying all the patches when windows starts up.  I can't
find anything about this parameter; was I dreaming?

Also, I got one of those Mitsumi double speed CR-ROM drives,
and I expected to be able to plug the audio out right into
the GUS board.  I knew it would be small, but I had to swap
two of the pins on the connector so both grounds were in the
middle.  I actually got L/R correct on the first try.
When I ran MPC-Wizzard 2.0, the midi test produced no sound.
It said something about a known "problem" with the Ultrasound
and patch caching.  Shouldn't that really be MPC-Wizzard's
"problem"?
